Graeme Howie is the new WA State Ten Rater Champion following a 21 race regatta at Jackadder Lake today. There was a terrific battle at the front of the fleet between Graeme and Jeff Green. Their Diamonds were superior to the rest of the fleet today. Sean Wallis showed his skills with a creditable third place borrowing Steve Grey's Prizm for the day.

The forecast for today was for the chance of thunderstorms in the morning, with south to south-easterly winds moving south westerly late in the day. Wind strength was at the

top of A rig and some boats were nosediving downwind from time to time. There were plenty of massive shifts, occasionally shifting up to 90 degrees. There were holes in the wind, and some boats found themselves floundering as the fleet sailed passed on both sides.

Early in the day, Ian Holt and Justin McAullay took off to score solid heat wins. Jeff Green started slowly, but soon found himself winning heats 3, 4 and 6. Graeme didn't have such a good start to the regatta. He didn't get a heat win until heat 8 - just before lunch.

After the lunch break, Graeme really got going, and started to chip away at Jeff's lead. The wind didn't get any easier to manage. It was very frustrating to have a good start in a race, only to find the wind shifting 90 degrees and have the fleet cross you on port, finding yourself in last place.

PRO Chris Woods did a terrific job keeping the racing moving along. We sailed 3 lap courses, giving skippers the possibility of catching up if they fell behind. Thanks also to Bruce Robins, Max Mold, Bob Paton, Lloyd Coles and Rosco Bennett for helping on the day.

Unfortunately, Bink Frayne and Ian Holt had problems with their boats and had to cease racing early. In particular, Ian had some very good finishes and was sitting in second position at lunch before his winch packed up. Ian Sherriff also had problems with his A rig, forcing him to sail with his B rig for the last few races.

Generally, racing was clean, despite the difficulties of the wind. Skippers took their penalties promptly accepting infringements and no protests were required.
