The championships were run over the weekend of December 7 & 8 at Austin Lakes

Roger Paul came out on top in a hard fought One Meter State Championship sailed at Austin Lakes in South Yunderup today.

Seventeen skippers commenced the regatta on Saturday Dec 7 2013. PRO Rob Murdoch addressed the group at the briefing, welcoming two visitors who had made the treck from the Eastern States. Mat Grey and Annette made the trip from Tasmania, and Mario Gulic travelled from Melbourne to join us.

Ray Forsyth and Andree Bennett did the scoring and finishing for us, whilst Peter Holland assisted as an observer. Skippers are very grateful for the time our terrific volunteers put into making sure the regatta runs smoothly. Thank you Rob, Ray, Andree and Peter.

Rob elected for a two fleet option on Day 1. The scene was set very early, as Roger and Glenn Dawson won the seeding races. Early on, all boats had their A rigs up, and the wind was fairly steady from the south. Mario got the regatta off to a flyer, winning the first race very comprehensively. He was heard to mutter - "that will do - let's finish here!" Soon Rosco Bennett had his new V8 flying, taking out two heat wins.

Sean Wallis had a slow start with a few winch problems. He replaced the winch at lunchtime, and once the issues were ironed out, he came back strongly. Soon after lunch, the wind built into really good solid B rig conditions. The wind was very steady and there were no big shifts or veers to deal with, making it a true sailing test.

By the conclusion of Day 1, Roger held a slender lead on 32 points, Rosco was second with 34 points and Glenn was third with 37. That evening, all the skippers adjourned to the local Yunderup Sports and Recreation club for a well earned beer. Afterwards, a number of us went to the local tavern for a terrific meal and some more cheer!

Waking to Day 2, the wind wasn't going to play the game. There were a few delays whilst Rob tried to set a fair course. We had a couple of false starts and a couple of races where it was a procession. Glenn started the day with a flourish, taking out the two races. An early lunch was called, which proved to be a good idea. A bit after midday, the sea breeze kicked in, and racing continued in one fleet. At lunch, Glenn had just hit the front, but only one point seperated him from Roger.

No skipper dominated the regatta, but consistency was the name of the game. As the afternoon progressed, it became a battle of two. With two races to go, the scores at the top of the table were tied. A poor start by Glenn and getting caught on the outside of a fairly big persistent shift in the last two races were the difference. Roger started well and made sure of his win in emphatic style.

Interestingly, only 5 skippers won heats with Roger winning 8, Glenn and Rosco winning 7 each, Sean taking out 3 and Mario getting two. Peter Buchanan is one to watch, as he is finding his way around his Britpop quite nicely. The stronger winds suited him very well. Mat Grey won the Sportsman Award for fair sailing - a well deserved and popular prize winner.

Improving over the course of the weekend was Dave Bedford with his Goth. Dave's boat looks lovely, and whilst he has not sailed IOM's all that much, he showed definite improvement with his sailing over the weekend - certainly will be better for the hit-out. Also showing great improvement with his Kantun, was Michael Cameron from Albany. Michael's result would please him, as he finished in a much better place than his last regatta. The boat showed glimpses of it's potential at times.

It was a very well run regatta, with thanks again going to Rob, Ray and Andree as well as Peter.
