2020 Ray TIlbrook Memorial Ten Rater Regatta

Perth Radio Sailing CLub decided that the 2020 Ray TIlbrook Memorial Ten Rater regatta would be shifted to the Maylands Yacht Club following difficulties with the water level at Jackadder Lake. The other unfortunate occurance for this year was that there were a few people who normally participate were otherwise occupied on the day - whether it was through family or work commitments.

Only five skippers were available this year to contest the Ray Tilbrook Memorial. This was slightly unfortunate, as we were presented with supurb conditions with a southerly wind in the morning, which shifted to the south-west during the lunch break. Most boats carried their B rigs during the day. Towards the end of the day, it was almost up to C rig.

The Tens were flying around the river with the racing extremely close. Early in the day, Graeme Howie was holding his B+ rig, which gave him a slight advantage when the wind reduced a little. At other times, the B rigs were preferable, as Graeme had a few nose down, rudder up situations to deal with.

Glenn Dawson and Graeme battled out the lead through the morning, and at the lunch break were sitting equal on points, with Chris Woods and Roger Paul not too far behind. After lunch, the wind shifted towards the south-west and built a little. Graeme was a bit late changing his rig down, and suffered a couple of fourth and fifth places before making the change and getting back into the game.

Meanwhile, Chris Woods was enjoying the stronger winds and managed a couple of heat wins and low scores. Denton had a few good results in the stronger winds too. His boat was always close, and his boat speed quite good.

Consistency was again the key. Glenn maintained his lead through the afternoon, sailing conservatively and generally maintaining results in the top three. Glenn finished with 6 heat wins, Graeme got 3, Chris had 2 and Roger got one.

A big thank you to both Rob Mews and Ross Bennett, who came along to run the day. Rob acted as the Race Officer and Ross managed the boat and scoring. Thank you guys - your contribution is greatly appreciated.

We look forward to the WA State Championships next weekend and hope that the wind plays by the rules - which means terrific conditions for fast and furious Ten Rater racing!
