A small but enthusiastic group of radio sailors gathered at Maylands Yacht Club on Saturday 9 September 2023 to participate in the Hub and Michael Bell Memorial Trophy for Ten Raters. Those who knew Hub and Michel will attest to their contributions to radio sailing over many, many years.
The Ten Raters were Hub and Michael's favourite class. They commenced radio sailing in the late 1970s, building boats, making all their own fittings (things were different then - you didn't have the luxury of a radio sailing supplies shop!). Hub and Michael travelled the country, dragging a trailer filled with Ten Raters to various places to participate in National Championships.
Both Hub and Michael held positions on the National Committee. Michael was ARYA Treasurer for many years and Hub held both National President and National Secretary roles. They were instrumental in furthering the ARYA, whilst also working for the Western Australian Model Yacht Association (later RSAWA) and particularly founding and making sure the Perth Radio Sailing Club prospered.
It is fitting that the Ten Raters gather to remember the Bells - sailing for "The Bell". The trophy was initiated after Hub's son Michael passed in 2013.
This year, we sailed 16 races in a great 8 to 12 knot westerly. Thank you to Rod Moss, who came down to watch, and got slingshot into recording the finishing places and keeping us honest on the starting line - good job Rod.
Glenn Dawson took out the Bell, followed by Roger Paul in second. Rounding out the podium was Denton Roberts, who sailed really well all day.
The spirit of friendly competition shown on the day reflected the way that both Michael and Hub approached their radio sailing - a fitting tribute to the Bell family.
