The 2024 Great Southern Buster

The Albany Radio Sailing Club hosted the 2024 Great Southern Buster IOM Regatta last weekend, with 17 entries, 14 from metro and other clubs and including recent state and national champions, and three of our club member entries.

Saturday morning conditions were relatively light ENE at the commencement of sailing but as the day progressed the pressure slowly increased to around 12+ knots.

The air temperature rose steadily in the morning and by around 11.00am it was around 30degrees but with the cooler easterly pushing in and the shade available keeping the everyone at the lake relatively comfortable.

For several races late in the day the A rigs were changed for the B rigs as the wind went to 15+ knots but as the wind faded it was back to A rigs for the remainder of racing that day.

The wind direction from the east stayed consistent for most of the day, briefly swinging to the southwest after the start of one heat but swinging back to the east before the start of the next heat.

The course crew and boatmen had a relatively easy day with only a few minor course and buoy changes.

Buster 2024 - 1

Sunday brought slightly different conditions with overcast skies, a bit of early drizzle and light south to southwest winds.

After the course was re oriented sailing was underway again and getting a good start and picking the tricky south wind shifts proved paramount in obtaining good heat results.

The final heat was completed around 12.30pm and the packup commenced in readiness for presentations.

Final results saw Sean Wallis take out 1st place, Glenn Dawson 2nd place and Ross Bennett 3rd place. Full results can be found by clicking here

The Albany club sailors all managed to finish in the top 10 with Colin Westerberg 8th, Greg Westerberg 9th, Murray Deere 10th. (so some work to be done to move up the placings next year)

(Thanks, Marcus, Brian for sending some of the pics)

The Club and Race Committee would like to thank all those members who assisted in the planning, organising and running of this successful regatta.

Without the commitment and support of many of our members to organise and host these events makes it very difficult for the club to manage and run with just a few volunteers.

Also a big thankyou to those who travelled down from the metro and other areas to make the weekend a great sailing event.

The club has nominated to host another regatta in October this year for the DF65 and 95 State Championships and the Committee look forward to our members continuing support to run another successful regatta at that time.
