The cream of DF Class Sailing ventured south to Albany for the WA State Championships.
We enjoyed perfect weather or as Geoff Cass (Commodore) put it "Warm, sunny and windy which is perfect given they are just above Antarctica." Yes, it was right low 20C and good 5 -15 knots from the south West.
The Saturday was DF65 Boats and we had 20 entries from 4 clubs including 13 down from Perth. The racing was hot with 3 different winners during the day and multiple podium winners for the minor places. Our winner was just too good and with 7 wins from 11 races, Nick Jerwood has backed up his National Titles with a strong win. In second place was Andrew Donkin from a consistent Mark Easton.
On Sunday most skippers swapped to their bigger DF95 boats and we added another 11 skippers to make it a fleet of 31 boats. And we split the fleet into three heats to allow for the smaller start line and this gave the fleet room to find clear air and space on the Albany Lake on Sanford Road.
There were similar conditions to the Saturday but the wind direction did alter often just to keep the skippers on their toes. The winner had a clean sheet or picket fence of results showing his amazing skills to all that were there. Nick Jerwood was awesome winning 6 out of 8 races. In second place was Ian Sherriff who left Rockingham at 2am to drive down to Albany so he could race. In third place was Justin McAullay who was near the pointy end all day but just behind the leaders.
Albany Radio Sailing Club turned out a really great show and Geoff Oliver was excellent as PRO encouraging swift heat change overs and asking the skippers to settle the incidents out on the water, which we all did.
A huge thank you to Geoff Cass and his team of volunteers for making the weekend very memorable for everyone that competed or watched.
